Care / follow-up

The plan continues after the medicine arrives.

Follow-up means reviewing how care is going. Ask for that plan before the first fill, while there is still time to compare what a service includes.

Who answers after the first fill?

In FDA’s online-care checklist, access to a licensed doctor for later questions matters: the checklist flags its absence after medicine delivery.

Ask which questions go to the prescriber and which go to the pharmacist. Ask how quickly messages are usually read and what to do outside that process.

Ask who takes over if the clinician leaves or the service cannot continue the care.

Evidence A

What is reviewed during treatment?

For diabetes patients, the official Wegovy (semaglutide) instructions call for checks of blood sugar. They also call for regular measurement of how fast the heart beats.

These instructions also call for kidney checks when medicine reactions could cause fluid loss.

Ask how symptoms, progress and any test results will be discussed. Ask what would lead to an in-person review or a changed plan.

Evidence B

What if I want to stop or cannot refill?

In the STEP 1 follow-up study, about two-thirds of the participants’ lost weight returned during the year following the end of semaglutide treatment.

That study result does not decide how long an individual needs treatment. It makes stopping a useful topic for the prescriber conversation.

Ask what happens if cost, supply or a change in health interrupts the plan. Ask how records will be passed to another clinician if care moves.

Discuss treatment changes with the prescriber rather than trying to work out a new medicine plan from a web page.
